Cost Comparison: Gas vs Electricity Heating Systems

Goring URC: New Church Heating System

According to the Synod Property Office, electricity is approximately 2.8 times the price of gas per Kw/hr. This is confirmed through our own fuel bills:   Gas = 5.2p/Kwh and Electricity = 14.5p/Kwh.    All figures here are excluding VAT.     It is assumed that each of the following systems are on constantly for that period of time, whereas in reality thermostats would cut in.

Gas     Rinnai Fan Assisted Radiators  106Kw

Installation costs £15500.   Running costs £5.50/hr, 4hrs = £22.00

This is not a favoured system for fabric & organ as they heat up the atmosphere too quickly.
Liable to create condensation.  Fans may not be popular if people are sitting close by, – windy, and could be noisy, but are very efficient in heating space up quickly.

Lighting will need to be addressed.  £4000-£5000 for LED replacement tubes.

Total for Sunday Morning if fully on for 4hrs = £22.00

Gas     Non-Fan Assisted Radiators   >100kw

Installation and running costs would be about the same as the above.

This would be a better option than a fan assisted system as they would be silent and of course no wind from the fans.  Would take longer to heat up the area which is good for the organ and fabric of the building.

Lighting will need to be addressed.  £4000-£5000 for LED replacement tubes.

Total for Sunday Morning if fully on for 4hrs = £22.00

Gas    Conventional radiator system [2x45kw boilers]

Installation costs £17000.   Running costs  £4.78/hr,  6hrs = £28.68

Good system if we can afford to keep it on for all winter. Otherwise if used for short periods of time deterioration to the building fabric and organ can occur. It has a much slower heat up and cool down time, therefore better for organ.

Lighting will need to be addressed.  £4000-£5000 for LED replacement tubes.

Total for Sunday Morning if fully on for 4hrs = £21.48

Electricity  IR Chandelier System

6 times 9kw Chandeliers 36Kw          £7.80/hr,  2hrs = £15.60

1 times 6kw Chandelier in Little Chapel      £0.88/hr,  2hrs = £1.76

Installation:  Little Chapel £4750 plus 6 chandeliers at £5000 each.  Total = £35000.     [ Initially 4 + 1 Chandeliers only = £25k ]

The big advantage here is that it addresses the lighting as well.  Best system for organ and building fabric.

Some people have said that the congregation would be inclined to get warm heads and cold feet. We can test this.

Total for Sunday Morning on for 2hrs, and a Curtain Heater on for 0.5hr,  Approx  = £20.00

NB.  The Gas Infra Red system was not quoted for.
